No. Hair does not grow back thicker after dermaplaning. It does not grow back darker or faster either.

This is the number one question we hear before a first dermaplaning facial. It is also the number one reason people skip a treatment they would love. So let’s clear it up for good.

Below, we explain what dermaplaning actually removes, why the myth sticks around, why regrowth can feel different for a few days, and when facial hair is a different issue altogether.

The Short Answer

Dermaplaning cuts hair at the surface of the skin. It does not touch the root.

How thick, dark, or fast a hair grows is set by the follicle under the skin. Your genes and hormones control the follicle. A blade gliding across the surface cannot change any of that.

So the hair that grows back is the same hair you had before. Same thickness. Same color. Same speed.

What Dermaplaning Removes

Dermaplaning uses a sterile surgical blade to gently scrape away two things:

  • Dead skin cells on the very top layer of your skin
  • Vellus hair, the soft, fine, light hair most people call peach fuzz

Vellus hair is very different from the hair on your head or eyebrows. It is short, thin, and usually light in color. It covers most of the face and body.

The treatment takes about 30 minutes and has no downtime. You leave with smoother, brighter skin, and makeup goes on flat instead of catching on fuzz.

Why the “Thicker Hair” Myth Won’t Die

The myth comes from shaving. For decades, people have said shaving makes hair come back coarse and dark. Since dermaplaning also uses a blade, people assume the same thing happens.

But the shaving myth is wrong too. Doctors and dermatologists have said this for years. Cutting hair does not change how it grows.

So why do so many people believe it? Because regrowth can feel different at first. That feeling is real. The cause is just not what people think.

Why Regrowth Can Feel Stubbly

Here is what is really going on.

1. The tip changes shape.
A natural hair has a soft, tapered tip. When a blade cuts it, the end becomes blunt. As the hair grows back, that blunt end can feel a little rough to the touch. It is not thicker. It just has a flat edge instead of a fine point.

2. New hair can look a bit darker at first.
Hair that has been out in the sun for a while can lighten slightly. Fresh regrowth has not had that exposure yet, so it can look a shade darker for a short time. This fades as the hair grows.

3. Your skin is smoother, so you notice more.
After dermaplaning, your skin feels like glass. When the fuzz starts to return, the contrast is easy to feel. You are noticing it more, not growing more of it.

With peach fuzz, most of this is hard to notice at all. Vellus hair is so fine that the blunt tip is rarely an issue.

How Long Until Peach Fuzz Grows Back?

It usually returns over a few weeks, at the same pace it always grows.

This is one reason we suggest booking dermaplaning every three to four weeks. It lines up with your skin’s natural renewal cycle and keeps your skin smooth between visits.

What If You Have Dark or Coarse Facial Hair?

This is where people sometimes get confused.

Some people have terminal hair on the chin, upper lip, jaw, or sideburns. Terminal hair is thicker, darker, and coarser than peach fuzz. It is the same type of hair as eyebrows or leg hair.

Dermaplaning did not create that hair. If you have terminal hair on your face, it was already there, or it came from hormone changes, age, or genetics.

If you notice new dark, coarse hair appearing quickly, talk to your doctor. Sometimes it is linked to hormone changes that are worth checking.

For terminal hair, dermaplaning is not the best long-term fix. It only removes hair at the surface. A better option is Depilación láser Diolaze XL, which targets the follicle for lasting hair reduction.

One note: laser works best on darker hair. It does not do much for light, fine peach fuzz. That is why many clients use both. Laser for coarse hair, dermaplaning for fuzz and exfoliation.

Dermaplaning vs Shaving Your Face at Home

You may have seen face razors at the drugstore. They look similar, but they are not the same as a professional treatment.

Neither one makes hair grow back thicker. The difference is in exfoliation, safety, and results. A provider can also tell you if dermaplaning is right for your skin that day.

Who Should Skip Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is safe for most skin types and tones. But it is not right for everyone. Talk to your provider first if you have:

  • Acné activo e inflamado o brotes abiertos
  • Active cold sores or open skin lesions
  • Recent isotretinoin (Accutane) use
  • A bleeding disorder or take blood thinners
  • Uncontrolled diabetes

Get More From Your Dermaplaning Facial

Because dermaplaning clears away dead skin and fuzz, it makes other treatments work better. Popular pairings at our Berwyn med spa include:

Aftercare Tips for Smooth Regrowth

Good aftercare keeps your skin calm while hair and skin cells renew:

  • Wear sunscreen every day. Fresh skin is more sensitive to the sun.
  • Skip scrubs and strong acids for a few days.
  • Use a gentle cleanser and a simple moisturizer.
  • Do not pick at or try to shave regrowth between visits.

Your provider will go over full aftercare before you leave.

Preguntas frecuentes

¿El cabello vuelve a crecer más grueso después de la dermoabrasión?

No. Dermaplaning cuts hair at the surface and does not affect the follicle. Hair grows back with the same thickness, color, and speed as before.

Will my peach fuzz grow back darker?

No. Fresh regrowth can look slightly darker for a short time because it has not been lightened by the sun yet. This is temporary, and the hair itself has not changed.

Why does my hair feel prickly after dermaplaning?

A blade leaves a blunt tip instead of the soft, tapered tip hair has naturally. That blunt end can feel a bit rough as it grows. It is not thicker hair. With fine peach fuzz, most people barely notice it.

¿Con qué frecuencia debo hacerme un tratamiento de dermoabrasión?

Most clients book every three to four weeks. This matches your skin’s natural renewal cycle and keeps skin smooth.

Can laser hair removal get rid of peach fuzz?

Laser works best on darker, coarser hair. It is not very effective on light, fine peach fuzz. Dermaplaning is the better choice for peach fuzz, while laser hair removal is better for coarse facial hair.

Is dermaplaning the same as shaving my face?

Both use a blade, but professional dermaplaning uses a sterile surgical blade and removes a layer of dead skin as well as fuzz. It is done by a trained provider after a skin check. Neither makes hair grow back thicker.
