You’ve found the photographer, picked the season, and chosen Riverside‘s Olmsted-designed parks as your backdrop. Smart choice. With its winding tree-lined paths and historic landscape architecture, Riverside is one of the most photogenic spots in the Chicago suburbs — and just a few minutes from our Berwyn med spa, where most local couples come for their pre-shoot skin prep.

Engagement photos sit in a weird sweet spot: relaxed enough that you want to look like yourself, formal enough that you’ll have these images framed in your home for the next 50 years. That means your skin needs to look like the best version of you — not a version you don’t recognize in the morning when you take off your makeup.

Here’s exactly how brides and couples from Riverside, Brookfield, and the surrounding suburbs prep for their session at our Berwyn location.

Why Riverside Is a Photographer’s Dream

Riverside is the country’s first planned community, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1869 — the same landscape architect behind Central Park in New York. The village’s curving streets, mature trees, and pocket parks were intentionally designed to feel both grand and intimate. Swan Pond Park, Indian Gardens, the historic train station, and the wooded paths along the Des Plaines River all show up regularly in local engagement portfolios.

The light filtering through those mature trees is what makes the images. But that same soft, dappled light is also unforgiving — it picks up texture, fine lines, and uneven skin tone in a way that flat overhead sun doesn’t. That’s why what you do in the 8 to 12 weeks leading up to your shoot matters more than what you do the morning of.

The Pre-Shoot Glow Timeline

If you’re serious about looking your best — and looking like yourself — here’s the timeline our patients typically follow.

8–12 weeks out: This is when to start a series of chemical peels or microneedling if you want to address texture, acne scarring, or sun damage. These treatments work over time, and they need a few weeks between sessions plus recovery time. Starting too late is the number-one mistake we see — by the time someone calls us six weeks before the shoot, the heavy-lifting treatments are already off the table.

4–6 weeks out: A good window for Botox if you want to soften forehead lines or crow’s feet for the camera. Botox takes about two weeks to settle into its final result, so this timing lets you make small adjustments if needed without panic.

2–4 weeks out: If lip filler is on your list, this is the window. Any minor swelling will be long gone by photo day, and the filler will look settled and natural. Cheek filler follows the same rule.

5–7 days out: Time for a deep-cleaning treatment like a HydraFacial. This is the “glow” appointment — it clears congestion, hydrates, and gives skin that lit-from-within look photos absolutely love. Schedule it for the week of, but not the day of.

48 hours out: Dermaplaning. This removes peach fuzz and dead skin, which means foundation goes on flawlessly and your skin reflects light beautifully on camera. It’s the secret weapon of brides who don’t want to wear heavy makeup.

What to Skip Before Engagement Photos

A few things to avoid in the final week, even if you’re tempted:

  • Don’t try a brand-new treatment for the first time. If you’ve never had a peel, the week of your shoot is not the time to find out how your skin reacts.
  • Skip the spray tan the day before. It usually photographs orange in soft natural light, and you’ll spend the whole gallery wishing it were a few shades lighter.
  • Avoid alcohol the night before. It dehydrates skin and contributes to puffiness around the eyes — and the camera catches both.
  • Don’t over-exfoliate. Save the scrubs for after the shoot. Aggressive exfoliating too close to photo day can leave skin red and reactive.

The Short Drive From Riverside to Our Berwyn Spa

Our Berwyn location is just a few minutes east of Riverside on Cermak Road or Ogden Avenue, depending on which side of the village you’re starting from. Most of our Riverside, Brookfield, and North Riverside patients are in and out in under an hour, including drive time. That’s part of why we’ve become the go-to for pre-event skin prep in the area — it’s easier to fit a 45-minute facial into a busy engagement-season schedule when the spa is a 10-minute drive instead of a downtown commitment.

Book Your Pre-Shoot Consultation

If your engagement shoot is already on the calendar, the best first step is a quick consultation so we can build a timeline that fits your skin, your concerns, and your photo date. We’ll look at what you want to address, what’s realistic in your timeframe, and which treatments make sense to combine. Call our Berwyn office or book online — and don’t forget to bring your photo date with you so we can map the schedule backward from there.
